WHAT ARE HOLLOWCORE UNITS?
Hollowcore units are pre-stressed concrete panels constructed with hollow cores running from end-to-end and reinforced with prestressed high-tensile steel wires or strands.
Hollowcore technology was developed in Belgium some 60 years ago and has been refined as the result of 60 years of research and development. It is used extensively throughout the world.
The combination of hollowcores, high-strength concrete and prestressing, results in a relatively light-weight durable and strong panel which materially outclasses in all respects any conventional flooring or pre-cast system.
Shukuma Flooring Hollowcore Units markedly reduce construction time by promoting efficiency on site and result in improved quality and strength of the structure.
APPLICATIONS
HORIZONTAL APPLICATIONS
FLOORS
Flooring of multi-storey industrial, commercial and domestic structures of all varieties.
Balconies
Suspended floors in areas of unstable ground
OTHER
Strongroom walls and roofs
Permanent shuttering
Sport stadiums, suspended walkways and similar
VERTICAL APPLICATIONS
- High-strength walls for buildings (whether constructed with steel or concrete columns)
- High-security perimeter
SERVICES OFFERED BY COASTAL FLOORING SYSTEMS:
- ASSISTANCE with the planning of a layout to accommodate Hollowcore units
- The DESIGN of the floor panels only, should a client not enjoy the services of an Engineer
- The TRANSPORTATION of units to site
- The INSTALLATION of units by the placement of the units on the structure, and the final leveling thereof
- Grouting of joints using materials supplied by client, as required
THE ADVANTAGES OF USING COASTAL FLOORING:
- NO SHUTTERING or SUPPORTS (props) are required
- NO STORAGE SPACE is required on site
- NO LABOUR COST involved in the construction of the floors
- NO TIME DELAY while floors are cast and cure
- NO RISK of poor workmanship, the incorrect placing of reinforcements, of varying concrete mixes or of poorly compacted concrete
- NO CEILINGS are required
- 30% SAVING on the weight of the floor
Up to 600m2 of Hollowcore Units can be placed by our team on a well-planned and prepared site in one day.
ONE-STOP service simplifies the construction process and notably reduces construction time and cost, it also promotes safety and convenience.

FINISHING
LIGHT FITTINGS
Downlighters are easily installed by drilling vertical holes through the cores of the units and fitting the downlighters, transformers and related wiring in the hollow cores.
Standard lights and fittings are installed by drilling holes through the cores and tucking away the related wiring.
Panels can be adapted on site by use of a hammer and chisel, chiseling from the underside. Chipped edges are easily repaired with ‘Rhinolite’ or other similar approved material.
FINISHING OFF THE UNDERSIDE OF SLABS
The smooth undersides of Shukuma’s Flooring Hollowcore Units require no plastering.
These surfaces provide a high quality smooth finish. The V-joints between units should be raked clean after grouting. Finishing with ‘Rhinolite’ assures a neat finish. The use of
plaster is not recommended.
PAINTING
Textured paint can be applied over a coat of bonding liquid to the underside.

…STRUCTURAL DETAILS: SHUKUMA PRE-STRESSED SLABS
Available standard depths: 120mm, 150mm, 200mm and 250mm
Available standard width: 1 200mm
Non-standard widths: in 100mm increments up to 1 200mm
Min. Concrete strength at detensioning: 35Mpa for 120mm, 150mm and 200mm deep slabs
40Mpa for 250mm deep slabs
Min. Concrete strength at 28 days: 50Mpa
Suggested max. Span / depth ratio: L/50
Pre-stressing wire type: 5mm diameter triple indented low relaxation wire
Pre-stressing strand type: 9,53mm diameter stabilised strand
12,5mm diameter stabilised strand
Suggested bearings: on brickwork – 100mm | on steel – 75mm | on concrete – 75mm
Fire rating: 1 hour standard. Higher ratings are possible
The following self weights of the slabs are 30% less than those of in-situ cast slabs of similar dimensions, and up to 60% less than in-situ cast floors with similar load bearing capacity. As a result of the balanced combination of high-strength concrete and pre-stressed wire and strand used in the construction of Shukuma Hollowcore Units, longer supported spans are achieved than can be achieved with conventional reinforced floors.
Depth of slab: 120mm, 150mm, 200mm, 250mm
Slab only: 240, 275, 329, 386
Slab and joint: 255, 292, 351, 411
Slab, joint and 30mm leveling screed: 330, 367, 426, 486
